Vimeo PRO Video Hosting Now Available For Businesses

While the many benefits of video for the web are clear, until recently, high quality video hosting has been expensive and difficult for small businesses to implement.

Hosting with a free service like YouTube can save on bandwidth costs, provide compatibility with mobile devices, and improve accessibility with captions and built-in translation services. However, while YouTube is now the second most visited website in the world, it is also the third most blocked website by corporate firewalls.

Vimeo has long been considered a high quality alternative to YouTube but the online community had not, until recently, allowed any commercial videos intended to promote a product or service. Not to be confused with Vimeo PLUS which is a paid but still non-commercial account intended for more serious film-makers, the new Vimeo PRO service allows businesses to easily add video to their website for a relatively small fee.

Vimeo Pro starts at $199 per year, for 50 GB of storage and 250,000 views, which should be plenty for most small businesses (additional storage space and views can be purchased in increments as needed). The service boasts several unique, technical details including the use of the HTML5 player which allows videos to work on any device including tablets, mobile phones and even internet-enabled TVs. Companies can also get detailed statistics and broad privacy settings to limit accessibility, if required.

Since Vimeo is less popular than YouTube, it should be less likely to be blocked by corporate firewalls. However, much like YouTube, it is reportedly blocked in China. Therefore, the best solution for businesses who do have the resources and for whom reaching the broadest audience possible is the goal may still be to host videos from a private web server using a custom player.

Basetwo Media has recently switched all of its video hosting to Vimeo. Check out some videos on our website to see Vimeo PRO hosting in action!

Project Case Studies

Educational Video on Natural Gas Rates Produced for FortisBC

Watch video on our website

FortisBC (formerly Terasen Gas) required a video for their website to educate customers on how rates for natural gas are calculated and affected by changes in the market to help dispel misinformation.

The main challenge was in how to communicate this in a simple yet engaging way, making a complicated issue both easy to understand and somewhat fun.

Basetwo Media scripted and produced a video just over 3-minutes long by filming an actor against a green-screen in our production studio along with supporting motion graphics and music.

We recently produced a series of instructional video for AG Hair to be used online to show consumers how to achieve a variety of hairstyles using their high quality shampoo, conditioning and styling products.

They were filmed along with several promotional videos during the company's annual photo shoot which we mentioned this summer.

The series of looks includes an Italian Pony Tail, Waves, a Fringe, a Braid, an Up-Do, and a French Twist. Watch a few of the videos on our website.

Be sure to also check out the behind-the-scenes video from the shoot.

Promotional Video Produced for Acme Labs

Acme Labs is one of the world's leading geochemical and assay testing services with offices in North and South America as well as Turkey. The company is planning to amalgamate all Lower Mainland operations into its new head office in South Vancouver which will be twice the size of their current combined facilities and wanted to showcase this using video at an upcoming conference and at trade shows.

The challenge was in how to feature the new building which had yet to be completed in an engaging way while avoiding the use of narration so that it may be used at trade shows without sound if required. The project also had to be completed in a very short turn-around time of about 2-weeks.

We produced a short video by modifying an existing Google Sketch-Up file and rendering a 3D fly-through of the building along with renders from Google Earth, original motion graphics created in After Effects, and existing imagery.

"Excellent communication and meeting of tight timelines", said Acme’s Bill MacFarlane of our performance on the project.

"The promotional video was well received at the conference, and the DVD was a high impact backdrop for our booth… It was an entirely positive experience."

Wenco International Mining Systems, a subsidiary of Hitachi, provides sophisticated fleet management systems for open pit mines to record equipment activity, location, time and production information. Their marketing team was in need of a promotional video to give an overview of the company and product for use primarily at trade shows worldwide.

We scripted and produced a 5-minute video which combines live action footage and interviews filmed at their head offices in Vancouver with existing images and stock video, motion graphics, and a professional voice-over.

"Basetwo Media was on budget, on time, provided the right amount of direction, and made the whole process easy to understand, easy to follow, and enjoyable", said Glen Trainor, Wenco’s Director of Marketing.

Student Recruitment Video Produced for St. John Brebeuf

St. John Brebeuf, an independent Catholic Secondary School located in the Fraser Valley, was in need of a promotional video to be used in new student recruitment.

We produced this 5-minute promotional video by filming footage and interviews with students and staff from the school to be used in presentations and on the school's website, along with a shorter, 2-minute version for YouTube and a version with Korean subtitles which targets international students.

"The staff, students and parents we have shown the video to have been completely blown away and impressed with it", said Anne Fronteddu, head of promotions and marketing for the school.

"...The crew was extremely professional, worked within the school without creating unnecessary attention and were very respectful of our religious school environment."
