High Definition Video Production
We get the occasional request for High Definition Video Production. This is a newer format which Basetwo Media has been offering since 2006.
In most cases we still recommend the much more cost effective DVCAM format, for the reasons outlined below.
HD vs. HDV
A distinction should first be made between the newer line of consumer cameras labeled as HD and those which are of a professional level. The former typically record in a consumer format called 'HDV' and lack the image quality of a true professional HD camera.
Delivery of HD
There presently does not exist any reliable means of delivery for HD video, outside of Broadcast.
Blu-ray has finally won the battle against HD DVD, but the majority of consumers have yet to purchase these new, expensive players. Delivery on the web typically will require a decrease in resolution, so there is no gain there either.
In Summary
The most persuasive argument for shooting on HD at this stage is to future proof your footage. Several years from now, your project may be re-mastered for delivery in HD.
Unless you plan on broadcasting your finished project or hope to use the footage for more than a couple of years to come, filming and editing in High Defintion may not be worth the added cost.
